At the start of the novel Albom recalls a memory from his college graduation day: he is saying goodbye to Morrie and gives him a tan briefcase with his initials on it. They hug and when Mitch steps back he sees that Morrie is crying. Mitch promises to stay in touch with Morrie but he never does after college. Since his graduation, Mitch has become a newspaper reporter and husband. He leads a very fast paced life and is constantly working and traveling. He has become so engrossed in his work that it consumes his life. The novel recommences about sixteen years after Mitch’s graduation day; Morrie has since been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. Since Morrie’s diagnosis, he began jotting down ideas and thoughts onto scrap paper, yellow pads or even envelopes. He also wrote philosophies about living knowing death was very near. One of his friends was so taken with his writing, he sent them to the Boston Globereporter, who wrote a feature story about Morrie. The story intrigued one of the producers of the show,  Ã¢â‚¬Å"Nightline†, who then did a feature story about Morrie. Mitch happened to see the â€Å"Nightline† show and recognized his old professor. He called him to set up a visit. Mitch began visiting Morrie every Tuesday. Their discussions ranged from the world, regrets, death, love and money; the purpose of their meetings was to discuss Morrie’s view on the meaning of life. Mitch became so intrigued by Morrie’s philosophies that he began taking notes and even recording Morrie. Morrie’s philosophies included rejecting popular culture morals and following self-created values, loving others, and learning to accept death. With each lesson, Morrie becomes increasingly sick; during their last meeting, Morrie was bed ridden and near death. As he and Mitch hugged for one last time, Morrie notices Mitch is finally crying. Morrie dies a short time after. At his funeral Mitch tries having a conversation with Morrie, as he had wanted. Mitch feels a certain naturalness and comfort to this conversation and realizes that it happens to be Tuesday. After Morrie’s death Mitch regains contact with his brother who lives in Spain and is battling cancer.

An Attack On America :: essays research papers

Vonnegut uses satire, from innocent innuendo and wit to burlesque, sarcasm and cosmic irony to attack American society in the 1950’s and 1960’s. These forms of satire can be seen in ‘Miss Temptation’, ‘Welcome to the Monkey House’ and ‘All the Kings Men’. In ‘Miss Temptation’, Susanna’s â€Å"diabolical beauty† (75) or evil beauty mad Puritanism to fall â€Å"into such disrepair† (75). The innuendo of Vonnegut’s opening sentence attacks the so-called modern thinkers of the day and the ignorance and attitudes of the 1950’s conformist people. Vonnegut compares American civilization to that of the Puritans, who were extremely intolerant of anything different and posses the epitome of conformity. Puritans did not even go to plays or shows, and Susanna was â€Å"an actress† (77). The theme of Puritanism and innocent sexual innuendo is carried on throughout the story. Hinkley laments that â€Å"all of [his] pleasures are looking at what used to be pleasures† (81). Hinkley along with the rest of the town, find their only enjoyment throughout the day is by watching Susanna’s â€Å"tinkling walk† around the town. Suppressed by Puritan attitudes, the townspeople can only enjoy Susanna from afar. Wit is also used in ‘Miss Temptation’, as Susanna uses it against Fuller. Susanna criticizes Fuller and the other â€Å"dumb toots† (86) who judge her y her appearance. She could not help it if Fuller wanted to â€Å"kiss her† (86) and asks, â€Å"whose fault is that?† (86). It was not Susanna’s fault that she was born with â€Å"feathery hair† (75) and black eyes. Fuller hated Susanna merely because she was a girl and supposedly made â€Å"more people unhappy† (78) than happy. It was not the town that was unhappy with Susanna, but Fuller who felt that â€Å"beautiful girls gave [him] a pain† (82). The wit and irony of it all is that Fuller caused Susanna more pain than he ever felt from a girl by excluding her from the human race. Sarcasm is also used in the story. Fuller criticizes American women as being â€Å"the greatest actresses in the world† (77), only to â€Å"put an ice cube† (77) in a man’s hand. In ‘Welcome to the Monkey House’, Puritan ethics and morals are taken a step farther to outlaw any pleasure including sex, even for reproduction, â€Å"thus science and morals go hand in hand† (31). Just like Fuller took the humanness out of Susanna because of her sexuality and sensualness, the ethical suicide parlors and ethical suicide pill took the humanness out of the society as a whole.

Psychology and Health Issues

Psychology and Health Issues: Stress By: Kimberley Messina HCA/250 Have you ever heard of the term â€Å"fight-or-flight† stress response? You will feel this when you have more to worry about and handle then you are used to, or simply, when you are stressed. When your body is going through the fight-or-flight stress response, your body will make more hormones that will speed up your heart rate, give you a burst of energy, and make you breathe faster than normal (Healthwise, 2009). There are times when a little bit of stress could be useful, such as if you need to react quickly or if you need to work harder on something. For example, If you are trying to win a race or finish any work that is important on time. When you have stress that lasts for a long time or if you have stress too often, then your body will most likely have a bad effect from stress. When you are overly stressed, you can experience headaches, back pain, sleeping issues, and an upset stomach. Furthermore, stress can lower your immune system which will make it harder for your body to fight off the disease. With people who have existing medical problems, stress can make your problem worse. Stress has been known to make a person moody, depressed, and tense. This has caused many people to not do as well with their school or job, as well as having their personal relationships suffer. The mind and the body are connected, which means that stress will impact a person’s psychological health just as much as their physical health. Stress can impair your thought process, mental exhaustion, and can cause depression, psychoses, and some neuroses. You will feel pressured, overwhelmed, anxiety, irritability, nervousness, insecurity, and can have panic attacks, social withdrawal, and migraines (Healthwise, 2009).When your psychological health becomes affected by stress, it can affect anything that you are doing, such as your job, parenting, and school work. As we mentioned earlier, stress can be bene ficial if it is a small amount, this goes for your psychological health as well. It can have a positive affect on your motivation, reaction to your environment, and your adaptation. There are many psychology education programs that can help you identify your major stressors and help you manage any stress. One in particularly is called the Worksite Wellness Program, which is a site that was provided from my workplace. This website provides information on how to set up different activities and offers some guidelines on how to create some supportive policies and environments that revolve around stress management (). Within the website you can answer stress management questionnaires that can help employees assess their personal listening skills and their ability to handle stress. They also have handout notes that explain the workplace demands of the employees.Furthermore, there is an evaluation you can take within the website that will allow you to identify whether or not your worksite i s ergonomically suitable so that you can reduce any risks for repetitive motion strains. Finally, the website my job offers has handouts that you can print that will help the employees learn how to manage their stress at home and within the workplace. There are many psychological health issues when it comes to stress, as I have mentioned above. The major psychological health issue with stress would have to be its ability to mentally impair you. What I mean by this is that when you are under an unhealthy amount of stress, it will negatively affect the way you think and act. Our lives are made up of many decisions that we must make, and when under this amount of stress, it can become difficult to think clearly and make the better choice. This is because when a person is stressed, it changes the brain and causes them to have an addiction, anxiety, or depression. Stress affects many different individuals and groups and according to the American Psychological Association, the top three ca uses of stress is due to the economy, work, and money. The developmental, social-cultural, and gender factors all impact stress. Developmental traits such as any behavior towards children that is abusive can cause them to have long-term abnormalities in the hypothalamus-pituitary system, which is what regulates your stress (UMMC, 2011). Also, children face stressors throughout school, whether it is bullying, peer pressure, and tests for classes. Personality traits could also impact stress. There are people who tend to over-respond to stressful situations, which will cause them to stress more than they should.Older adults’ response system to stress becomes more difficult. The older a person becomes will impact their stress because they have to worry about higher risks for medical problems, the loss of a spouse or friends, and financial stressors (UMMC, 2011). Women, especially working mothers, will face higher stress levels because they carry a heavier load of stress than men a nd other women. They are also at risk for more medical problems due to having a child. Divorced or widowed people tend to have more stress than people who are married. They also tend to live shorter lives overall.Furthermore, people who are isolated or lonely, are targeted for sexual or racial discrimination, and experiencing a financial strain are impacted by stress much more then other people. There are a many risk factors related to stress. Some can be controlled while others cannot. You can control some situations to avoid stress such as looking for better ways to manage your time so you can get more tasks completed without feeling pressure. Also, you can try out new ways of thinking such as stopping the worry thoughts and letting go of the things you cannot change (UMMC).Taking good care of yourself such as getting enough rest and eating well can help avoid stress because you feel better throughout your day. Finally, speak up and talk about your needs and concerns because it ca n cause stress if you do not. The stressors that can not be controlled are events such as a car accident or another traumatic event, and a serious biological illness. There is no cure for stress, but there are treatment options to help you manage your stress. You can have self-care in your own home or take medical treatments.Self-care in your own home would consist of removing yourself from the stressful situation or address it, regular exercise, healthy diet and nutrition habits, meditate, acupuncture, and creating social support for yourself. Furthermore, you can also write in a journal, make a hobby for yourself, and express how you are feeling with someone you trust. It is good to laugh, cry, talk, and even express your anger in healthy ways. There are medical treatments depending on the different types of symptoms you are experiencing and how severe these symptoms are.You can receive counseling by mental health professionals and medical intervention for any of the physical prob lems that are discovered (Melissa, 11/25/12). There are a few health promotion strategies to address stress. Educating yourself is the first step in promoting good health against stress. Having the knowledge on how to handle stress when it comes your way is a good way to prepare you on how to react when it happens. When a person becomes stressed, most of the time they react in a negative way, which makes things worse.Knowing how to relax and get a grasp on the situation will help you better control your emotions and make better decisions. The next step would be to make lifestyle changes. These lifestyle changes will consist of exercise, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and using relaxation or other alternative techniques such as herbal or natural remedies (HPI, 2012). Exercise is a great stress management technique that distracts you from the stressful event and balances out the negative affect that stress takes on your body. You can do aerobics, take walks, go swimming, and take yoga, or tai chi. There are many options to choose from and all you have to do is pick one. Cognitive-behavioral therapy will help you identify the source of your stress, reconstruct your priorities, change your response to stress, and find different methods that will allow you to manage and avoid stress. Relaxation or other alternative techniques can lower your blood pressure, respiration, and pulse, and release muscle tension and emotional strain (HPI, 2012). These techniques would include going for a massage, meditating, acupuncture, listening to music, going on vacation, and hypnosis.Herbal and natural remedies such as aromatherapy and valerian can help with your anxiety and overall stress. All herbal and natural remedies should be talked with your doctor first. Throughout this paper, I have provided an overview of stress and how psychology plays a role with it. Then I reviewed a current psychology education program called the Worksite Wellness Program that was provided from my employ ment. After that, I discussed the risk factors that can be controlled as well as how to control them, and which factors that couldn’t be controlled.Next, I discussed how developmental, socio-cultural, and gender factors impact stress. Then, I talked about the treatment options that are available to the public as well as the promotion strategies to address stress. Finally, I provided information on the lifestyle changes that people will need to enhance their health and methods to prevent stress. References: Healthwise. (October 14, 2009). The Use of Technology in Classrooms Essay - 1685 Words

The Use of Technology in Classrooms Throughout the years technology has help advance our school system to make a teachers job easier. New technology enables teachers to get their point across to children in different ways, depending on what kind of learner the child is. Twenty-five years ago, there were no personal computers. Today, almost 30% of American households own a PC, and more than 60% of American students use computers in schools. The personal computer brought about many new advances into the classroom. Such as the Internet in 1993, which is used today in classrooms across the country. Then in 1998 video conferencing was introduced. Computers can also allow students to use learning styles that they prefer. Allowing them to gain knowledge of the subject at their own pace, with instant correction, explanation, as well as reinforcement. These advantages to technology are advancing even more as time goes by. While researching I also noticed that computers are often used for presentations in the classroom. Students use software programs like Microsoft Power Point, Microsoft Excel, and others. These programs allow students to learn quickly how to create a professional presentation on any subject, and are even good for beginners who are not as familiar with the programs. CD-ROM encyclopedias, Internet searches, and other programs offer sounds, video clips, photos, and text-based information that students can include into their multimedia shows. Publication of the presentation on the World Wide Web or an oral presentation to the class or school makes sharing the project far easier than a traditional handwritten paper, and gives the students a great individual satisfaction of their success. Student Mentorship Program For The Community College Essay

Student Mentoring in the Community College Student Population Served Student Success is now considered a vital element in the community college role. We must teach our students, and equipped them with skills to achieve their educational goal, as well as their career goals thereby, surviving in the workplace. Therefore, I am proposing a student mentorship program that targets all students enrolling at Mohave Community College (MCC). The program will encourage participation from the concurrent enrolled high school students, as well as students that are classified within the â€Å"at-risk† category. Each student at registration will receive information regarding the program, and encourage to participate when attending orientation. Identified Need The implementation and formulation of the program are highly informed by the fact that certain groups of students desperately need interventions to enhance their academic performance and increase their retention rates (Stromel, 2000). The program has identified six types of students who require mentor consisting of the nontraditional adults; students in remedial studies; students exhibiting low classroom participation; learners with low campus or community involvement; anyone who lacks positive role models, and students complaining about time. Firewalls And Infrastructure Security - 1201 Words

Firewalls and Infrastructure Security A firewall is a network device, hardware, software, or a combination of the two, whose purpose is to enforce a security policy across its connections. It is comparable to a wall that has a window where the wall serves to keep things out, except those permitted through the window. A security policy acts like the glass in the window; it permits some things to pass, light, while blocking others, air. The heart of a firewall is the security policy that it enforces. Security policies are a series of rules that define what traffic is permissible and what traffic is to be blocked or denied. These are not universal rules, and there are many different sets of rules for a single company with multiple†¦show more content†¦Advanced firewalls employ stateful packet filtering to prevent several types of undesired communications. Should a packet come from outside the network, in an attempt to pretend that it is a response to a message from inside the network, the firewall will have no record of its being requested and can discard it, blocking access. As many communications will be transferred to high ports, above 1023, stateful inspection will enable the system to determine which sets of high communications are permissible and which should be blocked. The disadvantage to stateful inspection is that it takes significant resources and processing to do this type of inspection and this reduces efficiency and requires more robust and expensive hardwa re. This type of inspection is essential in todays comprehensive networks. As they are in routers, switches, servers, and other network devices, Access control lists are a cornerstone of security in firewalls. Just as you must protect the device from physical access, Access control lists do the same task for electronic access. Firewalls can extend the concept of Access control lists by enforcing them as well at a packet level when packet-level stateful filtering is performed. This can add an extra layer of protection, making it more difficult for an outside attacker to breach a firewall. Some high-security firewalls also employ application layer proxies. Accountability on the Report of Performance in the Presentation

Question: Write accountability report on performance in the presentation? Answer: I would like to write this letter about the feedback of LIGHT the team has earned from the members during performance of the presentation on the date 25th November. A lot of issues have been recognized that shows the lack of motivation of the team members, but the prime issue that I have identified is: poor performance of the team. Being a leader of the team firstly I would like to identify the issues that cause this problem and also I would like to highlight the relevant theories. Secondly I would like to highlight the actions to taken to solve those issues. Thirdly I will go for the justification of the action that has been adopted to solve the problem. The further step that I would like to do is discuss the expected results and in the final stage I will show the importance of the action on how this action became helpful in order to solve the problem. Teamwork can be defined as a work in which the individual works in coordination with each other in order to achieve the common goal (Gaynor, 2015). Likewise, the members of a light team had same focus during formation of the group. The goal of our team was to work in coordination with each other in a helping manner so that the team can give a very nice presentation in order to achieve good grades after the presentation. With the continuation of the preparation, it has been seen that some of our team members have lost their focus on the presentation (Hawkes, 2015). They became unwilling to cooperate with each other. The prime causes that have been identified for the poor performance of the team were: Attitude and Behaviour: The behaviour and attitude of team members were considered to be the main reason for the poor performance of the team members. The goal and objective of the team were unclear (Holten and Brenner, 2015). So the team members got confused about their roles in the team. Some of the team members had seemed to be hesitant and unwilling towards the work in the early stages of the preparation. There was a lack of common goals, working plan, and a good leader at this point of time. This kind of issues can be seen in the forming stage of Trackmans theory. According to Trackman, during formation of the team there are so many types of confusion about the objective, identification as a team member, and team leader. As a team leader, I was scared in this stage about the lack of certainty in the goals and objective of the team. Being a team leader, I was unable to identify the problem, developing an alternate solution to the problem, evaluating the alternative solutions and finally selecting the most suitable solution (Liu, 2015). I was also stressed about the confusion of roles and task assignment of the team. Because of non-cooperation among the team members there was a lack of motivation which prevents the team members to attend any scheduled meeting. It was not possible to clarify any task. I could not encourage the team members to be involved in the preparation of the presentation. I was leading the team according to laissez-faire style where the team got the freedom to work because my effort was not enough for making a success of the presentation (Kabalo, 2015). The leadership style chosen by me was considered to be low productivity by the researchers. It is like a challenge for the team leader to effectively manage the team to perform according to the best of their ability. From the poor performance of the team, I have learned some new strategy to manage the team effectively. This strategy will help me to guide the team perfectly, and it will also help me in the elimination of bad behaviour in future projects. For managing a team, perfectly Belbin has suggested some strategy. He suggested that by understanding the individual role in a team, one team member can increase his strength to make best if his effort. When all the team members of a same team are assigned with the same task, it creates a lack of motivation to achieve that task (Lekka, 2015). They feel low self-esteemed which reduces productivity. But when the team members of a team are assigned different task it will increase the self- esteem of any team member. The team member will feel valued and respected, in this case, and this will in turn increase the productivity of the team (jibhhk and Wank, 2015). This strategy also helps to manage weakness of a team member. It helps a team member to contribute more towards achieving the common goal. This strategy has been proposed in the team so that this can be applied during the formation of the team. I will not avoid the warning of the management. I have observed that there is a lack of motivation among the team members because their roles were not clear. Being a team leader I have learned that there is a great need to assign a specific task to each and every member of the team before forming a team. Bad behaviour of the team could destroy the performance of a team and may cause low self-esteem of the members of the team. Assigning specific and unique task will help to develop the self-esteem of the members. The leadership style that had adopted was not considered to a perfect style to manage the team. I was bound to adopt that style because of my inability to manage the team. But the laisse- fairy type of leadership was not perfect for the team. Being democratic was not a good option for the team (Kabalo, 2015). The autocratic style of leadership would be beneficial for this team. Democratic Style would be beneficial for the team if the members are experienced, and having full of knowledge about the task (Liu, 2015). This presentation had to finish in a short time frame. So in this case autocratic style of leadership would be beneficial to complete the presentation within the defined time frame and to get maximum profit from it. For this, I will dictate policies and procedures to the team members. I will also direct and control the Task of the team members. One of the major reasons that result in the inability of our team to work together in achieving the goal was the conflicts among the team member. Conflict arose due to many reasons. Unequal division of work among the team members may cause conflicts among the team members. Some of the team members of our team were seemed to be as on- cooperative, and unwilling to perform their task efficiently (Lockhart, 2015). This also results in conflict among the members, and poor performance of the team. According to Trackman, this kind of problem can see in the storming stage of team building. In the storming stage, there is a great confliction among the team members about roles, leadership, and task. The team members in this stage are concerned about whether they are valued by the organization or not. As a leader of the team, I should organize the work efficiently and assign it to the team members. I would ensure that the members of the team have got a scope to know each other. For the best pe rformance of the team, the members should not see each other as a competitor. It is a common belief that when people work together it inevitably creates conflict among the team members. As a team leader, I was unable to solve the confliction among the team members. I found a very useful model at Monmouth, which helps me to suggest the strategy in order to solve the confliction among the team members. The focus of this model was to train the team members that have a positive result. The training helps to identify the cases of the conflict and the measures to be taken to solve the problem. I will take some corrective measure at the start of the preparation on how the team members will behave in the team and will also decide which type of behaviour will not be permitted in the team. The team will also develop some agreed rules (Smith, 2015). This will help me to resolve the conflict of the team. I would also suggest the team members to behave in the agreed way to avoid conflicts. The training should suggest the team members give value and respect to each other. They member would understand the feeling and behaviour of others. The team members of the team will learn by the training about the perception of each other on the action and behaviour taken by them. As a team leader of the team, I would assess the team members in a perfect manner (Tubin and Pinyan-Weiss, 2014). I will make the member feel valued and aware of the task. When the team members become self-aware of themselves, it will motivate them to work towards the achieving the common goal of the team. I believe that by identifying the causes of the problem and accordingly taking action and implementing them will help me in future to guide the team to work in the productive way.
